Manufacturer: Glenmark
Pharmaceutical name: Telmisartan
Pack: 15 pills (80 mg)
Telma (Telmisartan) is used to manage high blood pressure. It operates by inhibiting the effects of a hormone known as angiotensin II. When left unopposed, this hormone usually causes blood vessels to narrow and encourages the retention of salt and water, which can elevate blood pressure. By blocking these effects, Telma helps maintain lower blood pressure levels. It may be prescribed on its own or in conjunction with other antihypertensive medications, including diuretics that assist in eliminating excess water from the body.
Telma typically lowers your blood pressure within a few weeks, although achieving its full effect may take up to a month. It is essential to take this medication regularly, even if you feel fine, as it does not cure high blood pressure but simply helps to manage it.
The standard starting dose is 40mg once daily. If deemed necessary, this can be increased to a maximum of 80mg per day. Telma can be taken with or without food. To help remember to take your medication, establish a routine by taking it at the same time every day. If you remember a missed dose, take it as soon as possible. If it’s nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule—do not double up on doses.
Potential side effects cannot be predicted. Should any side effects emerge or worsen, notify your doctor immediately. Only your doctor can decide if it is safe for you to continue using Telma.
More common side effects may include: back pain, diarrhea, respiratory infections, and sinusitis. Less frequently reported side effects include: abdominal pain, chest pain, cough, dizziness, fatigue, flu-like symptoms, headache, elevated blood pressure, indigestion, muscle soreness, nausea, pain, sore throat, swelling, and urinary tract infections.
Rare side effects might consist of: abnormal vision, allergic reactions, anxiety, arthritis, asthma, boils, bronchitis (wheezing), constipation, depression, diabetes, breathing difficulties, drowsiness, dry mouth, earaches, ear infections, eczema, fever, flushing, fungal infections, gas, gastrointestinal issues, gout, hemorrhoids, decreased sensitivity, impotence, increased urination, infections, insomnia, itching, joint pain, leg cramps, leg pain, migraines, muscle spasms, nervousness, nosebleeds, conjunctivitis (pinkeye), rapid heartbeat, rashes, reduced sensitivity, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), runny nose, stomach and intestinal discomfort, sweating, swollen legs, tingling or burning sensations, toothaches, urinary tract infections, and vomiting.
Telma may lead to a significant reduction in blood pressure, particularly when you first start using the medication. This risk is heightened if your body has lost water due to diuretics (water pills). Symptoms may include light-headedness, dizziness, and fainting. Contact your physician if these symptoms occur, as your dosage might need adjustments. If you have liver or kidney conditions, it is crucial to use this medication cautiously. Ensure your physician is aware of any such health issues.
